HOW TO GET A SUMMER JOB

(With or Without Experience)

Summer is only a couple of months away and many of you may be looking for a summer job, but probably don't know how to start or where to start. The thing about  summer jobs is that you are not the only teen looking for a job, dozens of other people are applying at the same stores for the same positions as you. This is why it is crucial for you to "stand out" one way or another.

Ask Around

-Ask around, ask your friends, ask your family, ask everyone and anyone if they know of a place that is currently hiring or that will be hiring soon. Search online and on social media for places that are currently hiring.

Make a List

-Organize yourself! Make a list of all stores you're interested in applying. Take into consideration you favorite stores and anywhere else you'd find convenient working at.

Make a Resume

-A way to stand out from the crowd is by submitting a resume along with you application. It is a small detail that puts you ahead of the game. Let's face it, when applying for a retail job at the mall not many of us submit a resume. By submitting one, you're showing the employer that you are willing to take that extra step.

Make your resume stand out from the rest! If you don't have the Photoshop skills consider buying a professionally designed resume. You can buy one for as low $15.00 on Etsy.

Go To Store and Ask...

-Go to the store and ask for an application or ask how to apply. Speak with the manager and be charm-full. Obtain as much information as you can.

  • What are the skills required for the job
  • What availability are they looking for
  • What is _______ all about and what are they looking for in an employee.

Fill and Submit

-Experience, experience,experience......What to write down in the experience tab?

Experience usually kills us. An application with no experience is usually a turn off for many employers. Most people forget that ANY volunteer work done counts as experience. Anything done at school counts as experience as well, so if you haven't done anything in the past couple of years I would recommend starting now for its never to late to gain experience.

Once you're done filling out the application it's time to turn it in! I would recommend turning in the application on a Monday since there is less people at the store and it gives you more time to socialize with the manager. As you walk into the store slowly make your way towards the cash wrap and ask for the manager. Make some small talk with the manager but clearly state why you are there.

Call Again

-After you've submitted you application be patient...

Wait about two weeks for the store to call you. Once the two weeks pass and you haven't heard anything from the store you should give them a call or maybe visit the store and follow up on your application.
